A UV light is not an air purifier, and understanding the difference is what keeps homeowners from wasting money. A germicidal UV lamp mounted in the air handler does one job well. It keeps biological growth off the wet surfaces inside your equipment, specifically the evaporator coil and the drain pan. In a climate where that coil is cold and soaked with condensate for eight months a year, that is a job worth doing.

Why Coils Grow Things Here

An air conditioner works by condensing moisture out of the air onto a cold metal coil. In South Louisiana that coil runs wet almost continuously from March through October. Dust that gets past the filter lands on a wet surface in the dark, and biological growth follows. That growth is what produces the sour or musty smell some homeowners notice when the system starts, and as it thickens on the fins it insulates the coil, reducing capacity and forcing longer run times for the same result.

What a UV Light Does and Does Not Do

Mounted correctly, a UV lamp shines continuously on the coil and drain pan and prevents growth from establishing on those surfaces. That keeps the coil clean, protects capacity, and eliminates the odor that comes from a contaminated coil. What it does not do is sterilize the air in your rooms. Air moves past a lamp in a fraction of a second, which is not long enough to inactivate much of anything. Any company promising whole-house disinfection from a single coil lamp is overselling it.

Coil Lights Versus Air Lights

There are two common configurations. A coil light is aimed at the evaporator and runs continuously, and this is the one we recommend for nearly every home here because it addresses the actual problem. An in-duct air treatment lamp targets air in motion and is a much weaker proposition for the money. If someone is quoting you a large system with multiple lamps, ask specifically what surface each one is illuminating and why.

Installation and Upkeep Details That Matter

Placement decides whether the lamp works. It has to see the coil face, not the side of the plenum, and it cannot be aimed at flex duct or wiring insulation, because UV degrades both over time. Lamps lose output long before they stop glowing, so a bulb that still lights may be doing nothing. Most need replacing every twelve months. We include lamp condition in annual service so you are not paying to run a dead bulb, and we protect nearby materials during installation.

Where It Fits in the Bigger Picture

A UV lamp is the last step, not the first. If your home has a humidity problem, an undersized return, or unsealed duct pulling attic air past the filter, fix those first. Those are the issues that put dust on a wet coil in the first place. Our indoor air quality page covers that order of operations, and duct design covers the return path. A lamp installed on top of an unsealed system just fights a losing battle more expensively.

Common Questions

Expert answers

Do UV lights really improve air quality?

Yes. Properly placed UV lights reduce mold and bacteria on the evaporator coil and in the airstream, which helps air quality and system efficiency.

Where are UV lights installed?

They are typically mounted near the indoor coil or in the ductwork, where they treat air and keep the coil clean.

How often do UV bulbs need replacing?

Most UV bulbs last about one to two years. We check and replace them during routine maintenance.

Are UV light systems safe?

Yes. Installed correctly inside your HVAC system, they are sealed away from living spaces and operate safely.

Martins is the best. They have helped with my AC work, from a simple repair to a new unit inside. They have helped with electrical work, from a bad socket to rewiring my boat dock. Now I hear they bought a company that I use to fix my ice machine. This is great, a one stop shop and honest to boot.

I called Martin on Sunday thinking I would leave a message on the answering. I was surprised when an answering service took the call and routed me to an employee. He told me someone would contact me in the morning to service our unit. The next morning bright and early someone came out. I would highly recommend Martin’s after all we have been loyal customers for 50 years.
