A garbage disposal is the appliance homeowners are least sure about. It hums but will not turn, it leaks somewhere underneath, it backs up into the other side of the sink, or it simply stops responding. Most of those have a specific cause and a specific fix, and only one of them usually means the unit is finished. Before you replace anything, it is worth knowing which symptom you actually have.

What Each Symptom Usually Means

A disposal that hums without turning has something jammed against the impellers, and the motor is protected but stalled. A unit that does nothing at all has usually tripped its own reset button on the bottom of the housing, or lost power at the switch or breaker. Water backing up into the adjacent sink bowl is a drain restriction downstream, not a disposal fault at all. A leak at the top rim means the sink flange seal has failed, a leak at the side means the dishwasher or drain connection is loose, and a leak from the bottom of the housing means the internal seal is gone and the unit needs replacing.

Two Things to Try Before Calling

If it is silent, press the red reset button underneath and try again. If it hums, cut power at the breaker, then use the hex wrench that came with the unit in the socket on the bottom to work the impeller plate back and forth until it turns freely. Never put a hand into a disposal, even with the breaker off. If those two steps do not solve it, the problem is electrical, mechanical, or downstream, and it needs to be diagnosed rather than guessed at.

What Actually Kills Disposals Here

Grease is first, and it is not the disposal that fails, it is the drain line beyond it. Warm grease goes down liquid, cools in the horizontal run, and builds a restriction that eventually stops everything. Fibrous material like celery, corn husk, and shrimp shell wraps the impellers rather than shredding. Coffee grounds and rice accumulate into a paste that does not flush. Bones and hardware crack the grinding ring. And running the unit without enough cold water leaves everything it ground sitting in the trap.

Replacement Done Right

When a unit is genuinely finished, the install details matter. The sink flange needs to be properly sealed or it will weep into the cabinet base. The discharge has to be pitched correctly to the trap, and the trap arm has to be at a height that does not create a low spot. The dishwasher inlet plug has to be knocked out, which is one of the most common misses on a self-install and causes a dishwasher that will not drain. We size the horsepower to how the household actually cooks.

If the Drain Is the Real Problem

Often the disposal is fine and the line past it is not. In that case a new unit changes nothing and the fix is drain cleaning and clog removal. We check downstream flow before recommending a replacement. Louisiana license 40204, in business since 1967, 4.9 stars across more than 200 Google reviews. Call (985) 632-6428.

Common Questions

Expert answers

Is my disposal worth repairing?

If it is fairly new and the issue is minor, repair makes sense. For older or leaking units, replacement is often better.

Can you install a more powerful disposal?

Yes. We can upgrade you to a higher-horsepower, quieter model.

Why does my disposal keep jamming?

Frequent jams often mean the unit is undersized or worn. We can advise on a better fit.

Do you offer same-day service?

Yes, in most cases.

Martins is the best. They have helped with my AC work, from a simple repair to a new unit inside. They have helped with electrical work, from a bad socket to rewiring my boat dock. Now I hear they bought a company that I use to fix my ice machine. This is great, a one stop shop and honest to boot.

I called Martin on Sunday thinking I would leave a message on the answering. I was surprised when an answering service took the call and routed me to an employee. He told me someone would contact me in the morning to service our unit. The next morning bright and early someone came out. I would highly recommend Martin’s after all we have been loyal customers for 50 years.
