On new construction the plumbing goes in before anyone can see it and stays there for the life of the building. There is no second chance at drain slope, vent layout, or pipe routing once the slab is poured and the walls are closed. That is why the rough-in stage deserves more attention than it usually gets, and why having the same company handle plumbing, HVAC, and electrical keeps three trades from competing for the same joist bay.

Underground and Slab Work

On a slab home the drain, waste, and vent system is laid, sloped, tested, and inspected before concrete. Every fixture location is fixed at that moment. Getting the stub-out positions right against the actual cabinet and fixture dimensions, rather than against a plan drawn at a different scale, is what prevents a toilet flange landing four inches from where the wall ended up. We pressure test underground lines before the pour, because a leak found under concrete later is the most expensive plumbing problem there is.

Above-Slab Rough-In

Once framing is up, supply lines, remaining drain and vent, and fixture rough-ins go in. Heights matter and are unforgiving: shower valve depth set for finished wall thickness, tub spout and shower arm heights, sink stub-outs positioned for the specific vanity, hose bibb locations, and the water heater location with its relief discharge and drain pan planned rather than improvised. Everything gets pressure tested and inspected before insulation and drywall.

Building for Coastal Louisiana

Raised construction puts supply lines in unconditioned space, which means they need protection for the handful of freezing nights we get each winter, and that protection has to be designed in rather than added later. Elevation requirements affect where the water heater and mechanical equipment can sit. Soil that settles argues for careful bedding and support of underground lines so a belly does not develop in five years. Humidity means condensation on cold lines, so insulation is not just about heat loss.

Coordinating the Trades

The reason to bundle mechanical, plumbing, and electrical is that they all want the same routes. A drain stack, a duct chase, and a home run of circuits will collide in a joist bay unless someone planned it, and whoever gets there last cuts something they should not. When one company owns all three, that conflict gets resolved on paper. Our remodel and construction page covers how we work with builders and general contractors.

Inspections and Handover

We handle the inspection sequence rather than leaving it to the builder to chase, and at trim-out we set fixtures, connect appliances, pressure and function test everything, and walk the system with you or the builder so shutoff locations are known before anyone needs them. Martins is the best. They have helped with my AC work, from a simple repair to a new unit inside. They have helped with electrical work, from a bad socket to rewiring my boat dock. Now I hear they bought a company that I use to fix my ice machine. This is great, a one stop shop and honest to boot.

I called Martin on Sunday thinking I would leave a message on the answering. I was surprised when an answering service took the call and routed me to an employee. He told me someone would contact me in the morning to service our unit. The next morning bright and early someone came out. I would highly recommend Martin’s after all we have been loyal customers for 50 years.
